1986 (91 images)
1986 was a fairly momentous year for us! We very much became a couple in about mid-February, moved in together in April and in early may went away on our first very rapid trip together. A round trip from West Ryde NSW to Caloundra QLD and back again leaving on Saturday 10th and returning to West Ryde on Saturday 17th – Shirley’s 59th birthday. That night we went to the engagement party for her nephew Stephen Kurtz’ engagement to Nia Giannopoulos. Also that night I asked her own father for her hand in marriage. Then on the Monday (19th) I drove her to the airport for a flight to the United States where she was going to be attending the Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee with American friends Joanne & Dick Lindamood. I truly missed her while she was away and within a day of her return home she had organised my own 34th birthday (on June 14th) which was celebrated at ‘our’ home at 1154 Victoria Road, West Ryde. While she was away in the U.S. (on May 31st) I attended what was the last ever day of the Vanity Fair Hotel in Goulburn Street, City. The ‘Vanity’ had been the Saturday afternoon hangout for many of Sydney’s jazz lovers for many years with the Eclipse Alley 5 playing behind the bar to a very large and appreciative audience each weekend.
